The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the vast majority of businesses, large and small, around the world. Yet the extent of the effects and how businesses are handling the situation, varies wildly from business to business – even within the same industry.
Business leaders cannot control the pandemic or its effects. However, you do have control over how you choose to react.
This Too Shall Pass
Given the onslaught of panicked messaging from the media, those around us and even fellow business leaders, it can be easy to overreact, give in to fear, and make hasty decisions. However, it’s important to maintain a clear head, with an eye to the future. At some point this crisis will be over – where do you want to be then?
Your vision for the future will guide you to make the right decisions to lead you along that path.
Some may feel like now is not the time for goal-setting, given so much uncertainty in the world. However, now is a great time for dreaming big. In some business circles, leaders speak of their “big hairy audacious goals.” These are dreams for the business that are so lofty, they may seem wildly unrealistic – such as when a young Bill Gates dreamed of a world with a computer in every home, which is echoed by our team at Honiva that strives to build an HR function in every company to take care of employers and employees properly. However, identifying the stretch goals of your wildest dreams can serve as a trail marker of sorts, guiding you in the right direction.
Amidst all the uncertainty, try reframing the current situation as a temporary disruption that can open the door for other opportunities. Disruption and change happen all the time, whether we rise or fall lies in how we choose to react. Take the time to brainstorm where you want to go and specific improvements you could be making to the business. If you need, set yourself some SMART goals. Don’t worry about the details – focus on getting the ideas on paper, no matter how vague they are or what hurdles may exist. Later you can refer back to the ideas generated during this brainstorming session and choose those that bear further consideration.
While a crisis presents very real and tangible challenges, perspective plays an important role. Keep your eye on the ball, and remember that one day, this too will be behind you.
