One way to give strength to your company is to make sure it has a solid foundation. It sounds very simplistic, but it can be quite a feat to get it right. Case in point when you watch an expert in their element they do make it look very easy. Yet, upon closer observation you will notice that there is a lot of awareness and thoughtfulness behind each decision and action that is taken.
Honiva is very fortunate that we get to work with many brilliant thinkers and strategists who have built strong companies from scratch. Over the years, we have witnessed these business leaders purposely create, design, and reimagine their companies to adapt with their changing operating environments countless times. We want to share some helpful guidance based on our observations so you can do the same too.
Define the Vision
2020 has been an unpredictable year that has forced a lot of change and pushed many businesses into survival mode, while others were fortunate and prepared to take advantage of the opportunities that the market presented. As the next year approaches, it may be a good time to take a pause and prepare.
In fact, we would encourage business leaders to reflect strategically. Rather than a mere review of the year that has passed, focus on creating the bridge to your future. There are a multitude of rabbit holes to jump into as you take this pause. You may want to revisit your core purpose, how you respond to market opportunities, and what impact you want your business to make as a starting point.
As you discover nuggets of clarity and reignite your passion to keep forging ahead, it may also be a good time to do some proper planning. This single step can make the difference between staying at status quo or moving to the next level in your business development.
Business planning has evolved over the years, so make sure to take a look at your business from a multitude of internal and external angles to understand the whole picture before you chart your new path.
Also, keep in mind as the next several months unfold that your plan may need some adjustments. In fact, you may need to course correct several times to keep your operations humming along. Don’t be scared or stressed, humans are wired to adapt and change. Embrace it!
Further, do not forget that you are not alone. Lean on your team to make progress together. During times of change and crisis, your team can have a significant impact on your long term outlook. Employees who haven’t been laid off may need to find new ways to work more productively. Business leaders may also be called upon to support their team in new ways as many companies have shifted to virtual or scaled down operations. For instance, you may need to assign new responsibilities or make changes to employment conditions for your direct reports. If that is the case, please do not forget to take care of the formalities required to keep your business safe.
