Hybrid Work Arrangements

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an enormous spike in the number of people who are now working remotely. Zoom – a popular video conferencing tool – has become a household name. And more and more, the conversation is turning toward whether society needs to return to an office-based culture – or whether the pandemic has ushered in a new era marked by distributed teams.

Benefits of Working Remotely

The first, and most obvious benefit of remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic is minimizing the spread of the virus. While much of Canada seems to be getting the virus under control, the risk still remains. Keeping knowledge workers from sharing workspaces (and in many cases, commuting on public transport) may help to slow the spread.

Pandemic aside, however, there are clear benefits to working remotely. Many employees feel they have better work/life balance since their daily commute has been eliminated. For those whose work requires sustained periods of focus, working from home can provide a respite from the distractions of the office. Additionally, fewer cars on the road will result in lower emissions and, by extension, will help the environment.

Tips for Success

While the benefits are many, remote work is not without its challenges. Company leaders must do their part to ensure their team remains productive and the organization continues to be competitive.

Have Regular Check-Ins

Whether by phone call, instant message, video chat, or some other method, arrange a schedule for regular check ins. Especially while working remotely, it is important that everyone is on the same page regarding processes, priorities, and how the work is to be completed. Regular check-ins also provide an opportunity to voice concerns early, should the need arise.

Set Clear Expectations

Be sure that your team understands what is expected of them, including expectations regarding response times and communication preferences. Some teams may be comfortable with a longer window to reply to emails than others; be sure to clarify what is expected from your team and their unique roles and responsibilities.

Use the Right Software Tools

A wide variety of software solutions exist to help teams collaborate and the vast majority of them can be used from any workstation with an internet connection. Determine what your team needs and look for the right software solution to meet those needs. You may find there is a bit of a learning curve when new tools are first introduced. Some teams may experience a bit of short-term pain for long-term gain. Once the team is comfortable with these tools it is quite likely that overall productivity will match or even exceed the standards set when the team was office-based.
