In the business world, the personal well-being of employees has often taken a backseat to other human resources concerns such as compensation, retention and productivity. However, in recent years, a spotlight has been cast on employee wellness and countless studies are making clear links between the health and wellness of workers and overall company success.
Some of the benefits are quite obvious; healthier and happier employees will have better attendance meaning they have a greater chance of meeting their performance goals. Plus, it is easier to engage a person who is present. More recently however, there have also been countless studies corroborating real benefits to a company’s productivity and bottom line when they invest in the wellness of their employees.
According to a 2017 survey by the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, employers who offered wellness programs and measured the effects, two-thirds reported an increase in employee satisfaction and productivity, while more than half saw a decrease in absenteeism. This is why the same survey found that 9 in 10 organizations offer at least one wellness initiative, and the reason for this is made clear when these benefits are realized.
However, despite the prevalence of these wellness efforts in the workplace, it is important to note that not all of these approaches are equally effective. A survey by the American Psychological Association found that less than half of working Americans feel their organization supports employee well-being, with a lack of leadership support cited as the main disconnect. As an employer in a senior role, it is critical that you are engaged with your employees to help determine which wellness initiatives are the best fit for your organization. Commitment to your employee well-being initiatives as a leader has been shown to be heavily associated with worker motivation.
One of the challenges employers face in developing a strategic initiative to support wellness is extending that support beyond the walls of the workplace. Work-life balance has become an important part of the health and happiness of your employees, as well as overall effectiveness.
It is worthwhile to consider what sort of flexibility you can offer to your employees to help support them in their lives outside of work during their work life and beyond. Today’s world has enabled employees to better accommodate their personal and family lives through innovations such a remote work arrangements and other technological advancements that have made traditional work schedules somewhat irregular.
As younger people enter the workforce, they are more likely to expect their employer to play a supportive role in balancing their work and personal commitments. Keep these expectations in mind when developing a wellness program for your company and consider how those initiatives can adapt and evolve to the employee landscape of the future as your workforce may age overtime.
